A Salmon Factory at CE!

July 23, 2024

It’s been a salmon factory at Carnation Elementary School!

To achieve the clay salmon for the art installation project between CEPTSA and The Lee Arts Foundation:
1. Clay must be purchased and picked up in Seattle. Lee Arts Volunteer rockstar Jules Hughes drove her truck to Seattle for many materials pickups.
2. Volunteers must roll clay on a slab clay roller, use templates to cut salmon into specific shapes and sizes and score the backs for future installation.
3. Volunteers stack salmon between large drywall pieces to dry and flatten the fish for a bisque firing in the kiln (a pre-fire step prior to glazing).
4. Local artist and Lee Arts member Tassin Smith bisque fired every salmon in the kiln. A huge feat!
5. CEPTSA Art Docents prepare glazes and brushes for classrooms and teach students how to properly glaze a bisque-fired fish (three coats of glaze for the color to pop and no paint on the underside of the fish or it could stick to the kiln).
6. Volunteers paint a clear-coat on all glazed salmon in preparation for a final kiln fire.
7. Tassin wipes the bottoms of each fish clean to ensure they will not stick and stacks the fish into the kiln. She monitors the fish and swaps out batches continuously.
Approximately 30 volunteers donated around 200 hours to complete the clay salmon alone. Thank you so much to our Salmon Squad who were essential in making this project happen.

School Art Beautification Project

July 14, 2024
We are thrilled to officially announce a large-scale school art beautification project in collaboration with The Lee Arts Foundation! Our PTSA has been partnering with this incredible organization to bring a permanent salmon art installation to our school community.
Here’s a brief overview of the work done thus far and to come:
November 2023: The Lee Arts Foundation approached CEPTSA about a permanent clay art installation collaboration and brainstorming commenced about how to finance and staff such an undertaking.
December 2023-January 2024: Planning, planning, planning for the scope of the project. It was important to both organizations and the school that we use in-class time so every student could glaze a salmon and be represented through their art. We needed to bring in CEPTSA Art Docents, teachers and we needed an art space. Mrs. Frank, our principal, generously allowed us the use of an entire portable for the duration of the school year.
February-March 2024:
Funding from CEPTSA, The Lee Arts Foundation and Carnation Elementary made the project feasible. Materials were ordered and the new salmon art portable is cleared for use.
Incredible volunteers met every week to roll clay, cut and score salmon of varying sizes. The salmon were fired around the clock in batches in the school’s kiln. Getting prepped for glazing!
April – June 2024: CEPTSA Art Docents worked to schedule every classroom for glazing. These amazing volunteers prepped the salmon and taught students how to properly glaze clay. Students got so creative (see pictures)!
June 2024:
School staff and PTSA volunteers glazed remaining salmon.
A local professional painter and volunteers cleaned, prepped, primed and painted a vibrant blue base on the exterior east-facing wall of the school (next to the front doors) and the ramp hallway that leads from the MPR to the 4/5 wing.
Kilns are still running 24/7! We have completed close to 450 salmon and river pebbles!
July 2024: Volunteer artists are spending the entire week painting a river mural on the blue background. The salmon need a river to swim on!
August 2024: Volunteer engineers are working to install the salmon so they can be forever enjoyed by our school and Carnation community.
September 2024: Unveiling! Stay tuned for details about a ceremony to celebrate this unprecedented accomplishment and local collaboration.
We will be posting frequent updates about this project all summer. Check back for more!
